Compassion During Times of Division

Photo of a woman standing, but you can only see half of her left leg, part of her left hip, and her left arm carrying a bouquet of pink roses or peonies. She's wearing a white shirt with a black and white plaid like striped pants. The words in script state, "We all belong here." For 1000 Speak for Compassion.

Due to current world events between Trump-era America and the Brexit Shambles, the theme for 2019 is how to get beyond complacency or apathy to find compassion in times of division, and how to be compassionate towards people we disagree with, without condoning cruelty.

Complacency is a feeling of contentment or self-satisfaction, often combined with a lack of awareness of pending trouble or controversy.

Apathy is a state of indifference, or the suppression of emotions such as concern, excitement, motivation, or passion. An apathetic individual has an absence of interest in or concern about emotional, social, spiritual, philosophical, or physical life and the world.

While the world will never be perfect, and while we are not completely in a dystopian society, morale has definitely shifted on a global level, and the red flags are waving creating a perfect platform for a future, “I knew this would happen.”

Division seems to be the theme of the world’s darkness at this moment in history. All the major world events are designed to segregate us by opinion and outrage. Those who are outraged at the treatment of puppies to the left, and those outraged at the family who dared eat a steak while collecting food stamps on the right. Don’t forget to bring your straw man argument and pitchforks.

The image is a white clipboard on white painted wood background with some kind of white flowers on the left on a long stem and some pink flowers in the top right. The saturation was dropped so it's almost black and white with just a touch of color. The words on the clipboard are, "The secret of change is to focus all of your energy, not on fighting the old, but on building the new." It's a quote by Socrates. For 1000 Speaks for Compassion

It’s like people want to be the good, but they get so passionate about what that is that they start to be the hate.

All the good intentions in the world come to nothing when we become convinced we are “right” or “good” and the “other side” is not. It’s such a challenging time for so many of us right now, but I do feel that real benefit can (and hopefully will) come out of it if we retain compassion and learn to open our hearts fully to everyone, even those we disagree with vehemently. (Definitely not easy!)

We are in a volatile period because the human beings are volatile.

This world is desperately compassion-deficient. We need more Vitamin C or we’ll never heal from whatever is broken… not just because we want to make the world a better place, but because it helps us to heal and be resilient through these stormy moments.

If you can shift your attitude, not only will you feel better, but you’ll set the example for others to shift their attitudes and feel better.

So this year, we are trying to find some kind of inner resolve.

We are trying to be the peace without being complacent.

We are trying to be the love without condoning evil.

We are trying to fight apathy with a good ole-fashioned Care Bear Stare.
